To silence/quiet someone

The mayor gave up trying to silence the crowd.

If the crowd doesn't have a message or anything, they're just being loud, and the mayor tries to get them to be silent, could I use "silence" or would "quiet" be a better choice?

Both 'silence' and 'quiet' are good. Neither is better than the other, but 'silence' strikes me as a slightly higher register word. CJ
