to shape the clay in the bowl

I found that it's really hard to shape the clay in the bowl when I was at my pottery class.

I find it hard to pinpoint the meaning of the bolded part. Does it mean "to sculpt the clay in the bowl which is specially made for pottery class?" Thanks.

  • I wonder if the idea is to use the clay to make a bowl, ie shape the clay into a bowl .
  • That seems like a much more likely thing to do in a pottery class.
