I've checked on dictionary.com, usually find most of the expressions on there but not this one Emotion: sad

Can anyone tell me what "to set the tone" means. I'm currently watching american pie and this is the phrase in which i heard this.

This performance sets the tone for our senior year.

I think this expression means giving a flavor of what something will be or will look like.
In your example, it sounds like people/students didn't necessarily know what to expect from their senior year. But with the performance in question, they now have an idea of what it will be or a clue as to what to expect.
