To see if someone were talking

Hi. Please tell me if what looks like the subjunctive for the underlined part is correct. Thank you in advance for your help.

At times he has turned his head around to see if someone were talking to him.

Anonymous Please tell me if what looks like the subjunctive for the underlined part is correct. Not really—there's no call for subjunctive if he thinks someone's talking to him. Also, present perfect seems odd there: At times he turned around / he turned his head to see if someone was talking to him.
