Vocabulary

to seat (of a machine part)

Hello,
Machine parts that are seated somewhere are fitted into another part. Can we say that the carbon brushes of a power tools are seated into the brush holder? Yes, it's called a holder because it holds them into position, but can't we say:

-The brushes are seated into the holder.
- The holder at the back of the drill seats the brushes.

Do the two sentences sound odd? What parts would you use "seat" for?

It is commonly used with filters, gaskets, bushings, bearings and other parts that have to connect properly. The pipe fitting leaked because the gasket was not seated properly. Loosely install the left and right 13mm sway bracket bolts.

  • If you see the reflection moving, as I observed on my test, the rotor is most likely warped or not seated properly on the hub.

I see. A person told me that it was usually used with parts that did not move. How's that true? I agree that one could "seat a rotor". I own a lot of power tools and repair them from time to time. But on the other hand gaskets, filters, etc don't move

Gene93 A person told me that it was usually used with parts that did not move.
Yes,

The connection between a rotor and hub does not move. The rotor is fixed on its hub, and moves perhaps within a casing.
Gene93In AE, is it common to hear: "Part A fits into part B" or "Part B fits part A"?
Yes.
