Howdy!
I've never seen the word "scaffold" used as a verb, I couldn't find any dictionary entry like that either... so, what does this sentence mean:
"To scaffold the performance of social activities and to scaffold human affiliation within cultures and social groups and instiutions are the primary functions of human language".

Without looking it up, I'm thinking of the "staging," or platforming which workers erect before working on the side of a building. People who apply paint, plaster, stucco, etc. require a temporary platform from which to work - as Michaelangelo did while painting murals on the ceiling of the Cistene Chapel.
