What does the "to read" mean here?

I know it. I meant I wanted to know the meaning of "read" in this context. If the "kids" were a book name, I could understand it as, "She wanted to read the book "kids". But I think it is not a book name, it is really a kids. So I am confused. Does the read here mean "teach" ?
