To pretend

Dear all,

please can someone check the following sentence?:

"He pretended Tomas´death" or

"He faked Tomas´death" or

"He assumed Tomas´death"

I found all the three verbs in the dictionary and i am confused, I don´t know which is the more appropriate.

Thanks in advance

I'm not familiar with the first usage. The second and third are fine. " "He faked Tomas' death" means he created an illusion.

I think you'd have to say, "He pretended Tomas' death was real."

"He faked Tomas' death" means he created an illusion. He contrived to make it appear that Tomas had died.

You can "assume" a fact or a situation. He assumed the answer [was correct]. We just assume the conclusion.

Dear Avangi,

thank you for the clear explanation. The second "to fake" is the verb I needed. The meaning of the sentence is that he made everything so that people thought that Tomas was dead (but in the end he was not!)

Thanks!!

I'd be tempted to say

'He falsified Tomas's death.'

Rover_KE'He falsified Tomas's death.'
Hi, Rover.
I think that might be a better choice, depending on what he actually did, and what group of people he was trying to fool.

If he falsified official documents, with intent to commit criminal fraud, then you're absolutely right.

If he created fake hard "evidence" suggesting the death, "faked"

"staged his death" is another possibility.
