To present

"This work presents a comparative study between flies and mosquitoes" / "In this work we present a comparative study between flies and mosquitoes".

Are these sentences correct? Is one of them more correct than the other? Or should I use another verb? I don't know whether "to present" is the most suitable verb here. Thanks!

I think both are ok.

They're other similiar words, such as 'read'

you can say 'somone is reading', and you can also say "a notice reads:The meeting will be held at 8:00 o'clock"

Well, I used a sentence similar to the first one in a paper I'm writing, and someone who can speak English much better than I (but who's not a native speaker) told me rather sharply that to present was incorrect in that context and that I should use to show instead (he didn't explain me why, it was a note in the margin of the page). Someone else who can speak English even better told
