To -preposition or infinitive?

Hi,

Some animals are adapted to live\living in hot desert climates.
Some animals have adapted to live\living in hot desert climates.

Can both of the choices be used? How can one tell whether they should use a noun or a verb in such cases?Does the use of 'have adapted' or 'are adapted' matter?

Lots of thanks.

This- with have adapted- sounds better and Some animals have adapted to live\living in hot desert climates. And as for live or living I think either of them is OK.
