To prepare for

Hello,

I have an idea of the "for" in the following sentence that shows "attending on the purpose of the English exam".

{a course that prepares students for the English exam} = a course that has students prepared into a suitable state which attends on the purpose of the English exam

Thank you for your help.

I would not give this paraphrase. this one is a better fit: A course that gives the students knowledge, skills and practice so that they will be able to pass the English exam.
