To pick blindfoldedly?

Hi

I know there's no such word but how else can it be said?

To pick something at random.

Thanks!

What makes you think there isn't such a word? Originally, it appeared as "blindfoldly," but for some reason the -ed suffix has become attached. It's true that it's a rare usage.

  • It has three connotations, depending on the reason for the blindfold: disinterestedly, as in the blindfolded figure representing justice; ignorantly, as in the blindfolded player in blind man's bluff; displaying keen memory, as in players of blindfold chess.
  • None of these necessarily means randomly.

"blindfold" itself is an adverb, so you can simply say "to pick blindfold". It does not mean exactly the same as "to pick at random" though.

Thank you! I like how "to pick blindfold" sounds and the meaning it conveys. All the dictionaries I consulted corrected the word blindfoldedly to something else. Even the spell checker on this forum does that.
