To phone and to call

Hello!!
Could you please explain me the difference (if it exists) between to phone and to call
are these two verbs equal in meaning?
Thank you very much!

"to call" obviously has a much greater range of meanings, but in the sense of "to contact by telephone" there's no difference in meaning. Different people might have different idiomatic preferences for one or the other, I guess. Personally, I use them both, interchangeably.
