Vocabulary

to pay address

"The husband dying soon after this connection, Stanley became more at
liberty to pay his addresses to the widow."
This is an example I got from the dictionary.
According to the dictionary, this is a case when 'address' is used as a noun with meaning of "Courteous or amorous approaches to someone."

"In 1849 one was reproved for paying addresses to an unconverted
woman."
This is another example of 'address' with same meaning.
I was pretty sure that "approaches" means "a manner of starting or continuing a relationship with others."
But first sentence doesn't seem to have same meaning, and I'm not even sure how he can "pay" his "addresses" to "window"(???).

Do natives understand the meaning of "this connection" without more context?
Please explain about paying to the window, and approaches.
