To pass suddenly and passively into a state of body

Hi

Would you please help me to understand the given definition? In my view, "suddenly" and "passively" have opposite meanings. I have checked M-W for "http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/passively" and couldn't find any relevant sense. Please help me. Thanks.
