To pass motion

In Malay, it is " buang air besar" , is it correct to say "pass motion" in English ?

Top answer

It seems quite rude in Bahasa Malaysia. In English, we politely say that we 'go to the toilet' or 'use the bathroom/restroom'.

'pass motion' is not the correct English term for going to the toilet to defecate. I think it is Singlish.

And here I was thinking we were talking about Roberts Rules of Orders with motions that were made, seconded, and then passed by a majority vote!

That's exactly what came to my mind too, GG.

Hello, I'm not sure exactly what you are trying to express. "buang air besar" means to approve an action by a governemntal body or other policy makers (for example, a board of directors), then you would want to say, "pass a motion." For example: "The district assembly passed a motion to ban cigarette smoking in the park."

ASfter having given an answer based on the idea of the passing of a motion by a governmental body, I searched and realized that the term you are looking for is "bowel movement." Hmmmm, interesting connection!

It is not Singlish; rather, it is quite commonly used in places like Malaysia, Singapore, India, Pakistan, where the British ruled at one time.

In very formal British English, "pass a motion" means 'an act of emptying the bowels; the waste matter that is emptied from the bowels' [Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary].
