"To" or "for"?

Dear Everyone,

When we write the addressee on an envelope or in the subject line of an e-mail, do we write "TO Mr Smith" or "FOR Mr Smith" ? Thanks.

Top answer

On an envelope, no preposition: Mr. James Smith. E-mails are much less formal.

  • Just today I sent an email to the company address and wrote "For Brad" in the subject line.
  • I think "to" would have been just as good.
