He promised to never do it again.

Which is the correct sentence,,?

On the basis that it is better not to split the infinitive, the second one may be considered preferable. (This doesn't mean that I am always opposed to splitting infinitives.) For me, there is also a subtle issue of meaning or emphasis that causes me to prefer the second.

"never to do something" better expresses (for me) the absence of action.
