Usage

To my opinion

I have a friend who uses the expression "to my opinion" instead of the expression "in my opinion." Using Google I have managed to find a few instances of others doing the same thing. It has always sounded odd to me, almost illiterate. I have never actually heard anyone else use this term. Is this a malapropism or is "to my opinion" actually proper usage in some places?

It doesn't sound right to me either, but I have heard the phrase "to my way of thinking." Maybe it's an extension or corruption of that?

I hear it a lot here in Brussels but usually said by native speakers of French or German. I assumed it was some sort of mistranslation from their own idioms.

[nq:1]FWIW IM-Translator gives 'in my opinion' in German as 'nach meiner Meinung'which if translated back to English gives 'According to my opinion'.[/nq]
That's pretty good. I did a few internet translator tests similar to that some years

No it is not strictly a malapropism (is not a
wroong-meaning word used for a similar-sounding
word of right meaning.)

That would certainly explain it, since 'nach' often means simply 'to' (ich fahre nach (wherever)). And in French I think it's 'a mon avis', where 'a' (with an accent grave) is the same word used as 'to' as in 'I'm going to Paris.'

You are having trouble with the logic languages use in choosing which prepositions to use in non-literal circumstances?

Personal accounts are good because they lessen the liability against future taxes of the retiree while sequestering the funds he's been paying in so they cannot be used to mask current general fund deficits.
