to make the election

However, the UPA has the numbers and they are trying to make the election of their nominee doubly sure with the Prime Minister appealing to non-UPA parties and even the Opposition.

In the highlighted parts, I know (nominee means (a person who is represented by the voters) but I could not understand as a whole -- (to make the election of their nominee)

Could you help me?
