To lay down or to install?

Hi,
I´m a bit confused about the use of these two verbs. Please check the sentence and tell what fits the best in this context.

"The time for laying down the floor has been scheduled for 12:00 a.m."

Does it work "to install" ? I want also to specify that by "floor" I mean parquet and I wish to know if the same can be used when I speak about carpet.

Thanks
Pamela
