To laugh with art and to laugh from art

Does the following context want to say:

1.the best way to appreciate a comic artist is to laugh when you watch his/her work.

or

1.the best way to define a comic artist is a person who laughs at art and also makes others laugh at art.

Context:

To laugh with art, and from art, may be the highest complement that you can give to a comic-oriented artist.

"complement" should be "compliment". I'm not sure how much that is the cause of confusion. It is saying that laughing in response to art can be a way of praising the artist.

"complement" should be "compliment". I'm not sure how much that is the cause of confusion. It is saying that laughing in response to art can be a way of praising the artist. "from art" is oddly worded in my view. I don't know what it would mean to laugh "from" art. (You could get a laugh from art, but that's different.)
