'To know of smith ' or "to know about smith "

Can somebody explain me the difference between "To know of smith " and "to know about smith " !

I can think of no significant difference between the two. 'Best wishes' are probably more appropriate in a language forum than 'hot kisses'. Some of us are at an age when too much excitement is likely to cause cardiac arrest.
