to kneecap

Hello everybody,
I'd like to know if "to kneecap" is used only for destroying the knee with a gun or if it also work if a knife is used...

The "method" of giving a kneecap is not the issue. The purpose is to destroy the kneecap (VERY painful, LONG recovery). So it can be by gun, knife, hitting with a hammer, etc.
