To Kill A Mocking Bird, Gaps and Silences

Hi all, I recently received an assignment in English were I have to write a short story based on a gap within the book To Kill A Mockingbird. Howeverk, I'm finding it hard to find a gap and write/come up something that can actually seem like it can be a part of the book. Can you please help me?

I haven't read the book, but just glancing through it, it seems that there are numerous places where you can develop a short story. For example, at the very beginning of the novel, chapter 1, paragraph 1, it mentions Jem's arm injury, which happens much later in the book, and it says: "He [Jem] couldn't have cared less, as long as he could pass and punt." Here's where a story might begin:
