To kill a mocking bird

Hi

I really don't know if my question is appropriate for this forum--but could you please tell me why Harper Lee named her novel "To kill a mocking bird"? How does the title fit the story?

Many thanks in advance,

Tom

I think its because mocking bird is a harmless bird and it would be shame to kill one. And its the same thing with the harmless black man who is charged for murder...

I believe that when the reader comes across the phrase in the course of the story it is quite obvious. Did you read the book? If not, you're missing a great piece of American literature.

No Philip, I read its summary from here--perhaps which is why I NEVER came across the said phrase.
