To keep someone in check

Hello,

Is it okay to use "hold/keep someone in check"? Here's an example that I found: "So far Mr Kagermann has managed to keep his ambitious young lieutenant in check." I see that it's usually not used with people, but this sentence looks fine to me. I know one can also keep himself/herself in check.

Thank you.
