to install - is it an ergative verb?

Hi,

(1) This plugin will automatically install every time the user logs in.
(2) This plugin will be installed automatically every time the user logs in.

Which version is correct?
If neither is, could you please give me your version?

I think that both are correct. Some might point to (2) only but (1) is correct if you realize that the plugin is capable of installing itself (it carries out its own installation).

The only difference between the two sentences is the shift in Active/Passive voice.

Well, you've taught me a new word. A verb is ergative if the noun can appear as either the subject or the object (and the verb retains the same meaning) ...

- The plugin installs each time you log on

- He installed the plugin from the internet

Yes, I'd say that's right

Thank you Aspara Gus! (So would it be correct to call the verb TO INSTALL ergative? i.e.similar in use to "to open", "to display", etc.)

If you are being precise, you might say the verb does not quite have the same sense

When a person transitively installs a piece of software, they are copying it onto their computer for the first time

When the software installs intransitively, it is loading from the disc into active memory

But it's a fine point and, as said, I think you can treat the verb as e
