To-infinitive / Bare infinitive

What is the difference between the two constructions 'help to do the work' and 'help do the work'? When do you use the former pattern and when the latter? One of my dictionaries says that the former is mainly British English and the latter is American English. Is it true?

The AmE part is true, we wouldn't use the infinitive in that sentence.
