to-infinitive after a noun?

Geologists discovered that S waves ___only through solid matter,while P waves can be bound travelling through solids or liquids

A travelling
B to travel
C that travel
D travel

I chosed D,but the answer is B:to travel,please explain to me why it is to travel?
