Hello,
1. I want to relax.
2. I know him to be an honest guy.
In (1), 'to relax' is the object of the verb 'want' and can be regarded as a noun. The same is for
' him to be an honest guy' in (2).
Are (1) and (2) simple sentences?
What term do we use for these 'to-infinite' objects in a sentence?

Most exercises dealing with sentence types such as "simple", "compound", and "complex" are based on sentences for which it is easy to make a determination, not on more advanced sentences such as these.

- _____ Personally, I analyze 'to relax' as an infinitival clause complement of 'want', so I would say sentence 1 is complex.
- As for sentence 2, I analyze 'him to be an honest guy' as a non-finite clause with a subject ( him ), linking verb ( to be ) and subject complement ( an honest guy ).
