To hook up

Hello,

Could you tell me please what the meaning of 'hook up" is here in this sentence?

"I basically hooked them up." Can it mean "I made them gather together" because the person was speaking about his friends if I am not mistaken.

Be careful with this -- in some contexts (for instance, among college kids) to hook up means to meet for casual ***.

In the original quote "I hooked them up" probably means "I introduced them to each other."
