To + home

I learnt from the internet that no preposition is used prior to the word home when it is an adverb in the sentence. Then they give some othe adverb of places that follow the same rule. Here's the link:

My question is, ' is school not an adverb of place'? Why do we all ways say 'I went to school'?

Or to library, to hospital?

Thanks.
