To hold up sticks

from video about virtual reality, what they want to say with "trying to hold up sticks"? as well I'm not sure to what they reffer with axis (I will add the video if that might help) thanks

In the 3d would be really helpful to understand how the system functions, as I supposed to trying to hold up three meter sticks and showing x y & z axis.
