Vocabulary

to hold (property)

Hello,
I came across this sentence: "Foreign investors hold 50% of the shares." Would the following sentence be considered weird: "My uncle holds 50% of the company."? I would probably say that he owns them, but I am just asking. I hope you don't mind Emotion: smile.

Thank you

Gene93, Yes, it definitely sounds odd to me. In this context, "holding" is used when speaking about "shares". That's why they are called "shareholders" and not "company holders".

  • Although there is something called a "holding company", it has nothing to do with our discussion and treatment of the subject is probably beyond the purpose of this forum!
  • As you've said yourself, "owns" is a much better idea.

Gene93My uncle holds 50% of the company.
That sounds unnatural.

Say: "My uncle owns 50% of the company."
You can hold shares but not a percentage of a company.
