To hear him speak English

Regarding the four sentences below:

(A) To hear him speak English, you would take him for a native speaker.
(B) To hear his English, you would take him for a native speaker.
(C) To hear the English he speaks, you would take him for a native speaker.
(D) To hear English he speaks, you would take him for a native speaker.

What do you make of them? I think that there are no problems with (A) and (B), but (C) and (D) are rather strange. What are your thoughts on them?
