to have lived?

Hi there

This one is a multiple choice question prepared by professional test makers. Only on option is correct. Honestly, I couldn't find the correct answer. Question seems odd to me. I need a detailed explanation. Here is the question:

A huge fossil turtle is the latest species ---- the
ranks of super-reptiles that are now known ---- in ancient Colombia.

A) to have joined / living
B) joining / having lived
C) being joined / to live
D) to join / to have lived
E) having joined / lived

A or E could be the answer but D seems ok to me. How can I solve these kind of questions? Is this question evaluate gerunds or infinitives? Thanks.

Top answer

The turtle is a fossil, so we assume it is extinct. There are no giant turtles in the world except in the Galapagos Islands. Thus the verb that fits in the second blank must be past.

  • The turtle is a fossil, so we assume it is extinct.
  • There are no giant turtles in the world except in the Galapagos Islands.
  • Thus the verb that fits in the second blank must be past.
  • That rules out A and C.
  • E is not correct because the second verb cannot be a finite verb.

E is not correct because the second verb cannot be a finite verb. The finite verb in this clause is "are known"
B is not correct because the gerund form does not follow the verb "know."

To answer the question you have to know the idiom "known to". Otherwise, you're lost.

Uncle Larry is known to play practical jokes.

Once you know that idiom, you know that the answer has to be C or D because you need "to" after "known".
