"The patient has a deep sleep."

It seems unnatural to me.

We sometimes ask, "Did you have a nice sleep?"
"Having a sleep" or "having some sleep" refers to the event.

The patient is in a deep sleep.
The patient's sleep is very deep.

You could say, "The patient had

It's not about (a?) nice sleep that patient had last night. I need a phrase to describe his

sleep pattern.

So what about the indefinite article? Should I use it? I am totally confused.

anyway, I guess "has a normal sleep pattern" would do.

Me too. In Helsinki we would say: The patient is sound/fast asleep.

"The patient has a deep sleep." Hi, Pixie.
Your error is in the use of the verb "to have," not in the use of "deep."

The patient is in a very deep sleep is the idiomatic way to say it.

Hi,

If you want to make a geeral statement about 'every time the patient sleeps', you could say 'He sleeps deeply'.

The Simple Present tense tells us this is his habit. or normal routine.

Best wishes, Clive
