Can you help me correct this? I know something is wrong. Thank you!

Other grammatical errors are also appreciated

They had never in their life imagined, that they would be exposed for something of that kind: Two buglers had broken in to their apartment on fifth floor and emptied for everything, they had even removed the furniture’s. It had been some kind of nightmare to come home, and they where still not over the shock yet. When they had told their son about, had he just laughed and said: “Those are things that can happen”.

I'd just use simple past: He just laughed and said, "Things like that happen."

But if you DO want past perfect, "He had just laughed and said, "

Generally, use a comma after the word "said" before you start the quote. Mary said, "Where is my lamb?"

And yes, burglar. Note the other R. (Thanks Rish, I should have highlighted the whole word.)
