Vocabulary

to grab/clutch/grasp

Hello,
Can all three of them be used in this sentence: "Jack stumbled and clutched/grabbed (hold of)/grasped the handrail."? I agog to know if "grab" and "grab hold of" can be used in this context.

Also, is there a difference between "Rosie clutched/grasped my hand"? I prefer grasp in this one, but would be more likely to use grab.

"? Those all sound OK. Review your use of 'agog': it is neither grammatical nor appropriate there.

  • Clutching is more powerful, passionate or violent, I'd say.

Opss...that's right. I apologize. It should be "I am agog to...."

You could say - correctly, but unconventionally - "I'm agog to know if 'grab' and 'grab hold of' can be used in this context." The word "agog" is not often encountered in speech or writing in the US.

"agog" is too much for this context. It sounds as if you are being sarcastic.
