Vocabulary

to go through the window

Hello,
Can we say: "The bus hit my friend's bicycle and it (the bike, not the bus) went through the window of the barber shop? I've heard people say similar things, but some don't like "went through the window" part of the sentence.
The other version is: "The bus hit my friend's bike and it went into the barber shop". I don't like this one, but it might be acceptable.
What do you think?

#1 is fine. #2 is not wrong, but it doesn't tell us specifically about the window.

Yes, the second doesn't mention anything about the window. Some people say "The bicycle can't go into the barber shop. It doesn't have legs". Most people tend to associate it with "walk" in this context. There are other (probably better) options, but some people use it, some people hate it.

I would say "The bus hit my friend's bicycle and knocked it through the window of a barber shop." That way, the same word (bus) is the subject of both verbs (hit, knocked).

Yes, that's one of the options I had in mind. The other one would be: "...and sent it flying into the barber shop".

Gene93.and sent it flying into the barber shop".
...though again, it could have flown through the open door.

. . . into a barber shop can also ,mean the bike hit a barber shop

Consider.
eg He drove his car into a tree just means the car hit a tree.

That's true. The window had nothing to do with that sentence. Would "...sent it flying through the window of the barber shop" sound good?

Gene, is this friend whose bicycle went into the barber shop the same one whose motorcycle went into a cornfield and whose old bicycle went into a hardware store?
