To go + Infinitive or -ing?

1. "Go play somewhere else."

I know that playing won't work following go, and my question is related to the following

2. "Don't go wandering off too far"

Is this one in -ing form because it's from an idiom?

Would, "Don't go wander off too far" be incorrect?

Thank you
