To go after?

Hi I'm not sure i got right its meaning

"The war of words over Benghazi escalated Wednesday when President Obama told his critics to "go after me" rather than Ambassador Susan Rice. Those critics then said they would do exactly that."

Hi In UK English, someone might say to a bully - "If you want a fight, pick on me" I think Obama is saying that if his critics want to argue about the issue then they are wrong to pick on his UN Ambassador: they should have the argument with him - "go after him" Dave
