Hello,
A few hours ago I came across this sentence "The doctors were able to fish all three metal spikes out of the factory worker's arm". To me, "fish out" means getting something out of water or out of a container (a pocket, bag, etc). Does "fish out" sound okay in this context?
Thank you.
It's fine. The term implies that the doctors were not doing this surgery in a delicate manner.

I agree with you. I can see them maybe fishing something smallish out of his abdomen by digging around until they find it, but not spikes out of an arm.
