Is "to find out" considered not suitable for academic writing? What is the proper word when we want to know something through our research, "to determine"?

Thank you 'to find out' is fine, or even better, just 'to find', but if you want another word, you can use 'to discover', possibly even 'to learn' if the context allows it.
