to find a safe resting point

To his young students, climbing a tree is not just a physical challenge. They must also think hard to find a safe resting/rest point among the branches of the tree.

For a start, which fits better in the sample above and why?

Second, what does a safe resting/rest point refer to? Thanks.

I like 'resting' better-- its meaning is clearer and at the same time more dynamic. I also think 'spot' would be much better than 'point', which sounds uncomfortable. 'Resting spot' is a concatenation of limbs that permits the climber to sit or crouch comfortably and take a break from active climbing.

I have no idea about subtle differences-- resting spot sounds clearer and more natural to me... and, as I said, more dynamic: the kids are climbing and then resting and then climbing some more.

A concatenation of limbs-- my pun on Proust's 'concatenation of circumstances'-- would be a grouping of tree limbs convenient for resting comfortably upon.

Got it.
