To express make matters worse

Dear teachers,

I would like to express that the event made matters worse for the Korean economy.

Against this backdrop, does the following sentence make sense?

"The event made the Korean economy more difficult."

If not, could you please proof-read the above mentioned sentence?

Thanks and best regards,

David Kim

"made the Korean economy more difficult" does not really work. In your question you already mentioned a good way to say this:

"The event made matters worse for the Korean economy."
