To exhaust the stock of sth

Hi. I'm translating an English translation of an article by Sigmund Freud. I can't understand the meaning of this sentence:

Since she never brought up the same precipitating cause of a pain twice over, it seemed that we were justified in supposing that we should in this way exhaust the stock of them.

What does it exactly mean to exhaust the stock of sth?

Thanks in advance
