To engulf an area

Hello,

Do "Darkness engulfed the village" and "Thick for engulfed the valley" sound okay to you? I usually encounter "engulf" in more menacing contexts, in which damage/harm is being done to something: "Within minutes the building was engulfed in flames" for example. Or when a negative emotion affects someone.
