To eat a plate of soup

Hi,

(1) The following is taken from "English Grammar in use" by Murphy"

"The kettle is boiling. Can you turn it off please?"

I guess the pronoun it stands for kettle in the question above? On the other hand, the speaker obviously wants somebody else to switch off the specific burner the kettle stands on?

How common "illogical" constructs like this are in English?
Could you please give me more examples of this kind?

(2)

Please ask unrelated questions in separate threads. You'll get quicker answers that way.

(2) Soup is served in bowls or cups, not on plates.

We talk about drinking soup rather than eating it, even if it's the kind of soup with solid food in it that needs chewing.

You can drink a bowl or a bowlful/a cup or a cupful of soup.
